SUMMARY:River Detectives Workshop - River Trym\, Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Many of our rivers across the Avon catchment are in poor ecological condition. With the help of water quality data collected by our team of River Detective volunteers\, we are able to monitor their condition\, helping us to focus our river restoration projects on the areas that need it most. \nBristol Avon Rivers Trust (BART) are running a free training workshop at 7:00pm on Thurs 18 July on the River Trym at Coombe Dingle. During the workshop\, volunteers will be shown by members of the BART team how to collect water samples taken from the river and be given their own water quality testing kit to take home and use as part of our on-going River Detectives volunteer program. \nParticipants are welcomed from all backgrounds\, with no previous experience of volunteering\, or river monitoring being required. \nRiver Detectives is BART’s leading citizen science project and involves volunteers across local communities conducting long-term water quality monitoring of key sections of our local rivers. At present\, we especially need more River Detective volunteers to monitor areas of the River Trym and Hazel Brook. More can be found out about River Detectives project here. \nIf you would like to attend the training evening at 7:00pm on 18 July\, please sign up here. \nIf you have any questions\, or are interested in becoming a River Detective but cannot make the workshop\, please contact Dan\, and we may be able to make alternative arrangements. \n

SUMMARY:River Walk - Stoke Gifford
DESCRIPTION:Join BART for a 3km guided walk along Stoke Brook showcasing the habitat restoration work we have been doing in the area. Come and see what BART have done to reduce flood risk and improve the health of the brook using nature-based solutions. \nWe will meet in Meade Park Car Park and walk to see leaky dams\, woody berms and large wood debris installed in the brook. These structures help slow the flow of water\, reconnect the brook with its floodplain and improve habitat diversity. BART’s engagement and education officer will talk about the work done and how it helps improve this heavily modified river. \nThe pace of the walk will be slow\, making plenty of stops to talk about the river. \nThe event is free\, but please sign up via EventBrite (or contact amy@bristolavonriverstrust.org)

SUMMARY:Pickedmoor Rhine River Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join Bristol Avon Rivers Trust for a day of practical conservation work to help restore the Pickedmoor Rhine river in Thornbury. \nThe river channel is currently over straightened with a excess of sediment on the bed. To encourage natural river processes to return and to enhance the biodiversity of the river this project will construct 10 complex woody material structures. These structures help diversify flow conditions\, filter out sediments and provide refuge for river wildlife. \nThe day will involve lots of physical labour both along and within the river channel to build the structures. The work involves using tools (hammers and saws) and takes place on often uneven and slippy ground. Because of the working conditions\, anyone interested in signing up should self assess whether they feel they can safely undertake these tasks. \nThe ending of each day may vary depending on conditions on the ground. \nPlease sign up for the event via EventBrite \nIf you have any questions\, email jacob@bristolavonriverstrust.org

SUMMARY:Saving Water for River Wildlife - a talk and discussion
DESCRIPTION:BART are hosting a talk and discussion about the future of our water supply\, what the issues mean for river wildlife and what we can all do to help. Come and find out how the pressures of climate change and increased population are predicted to impact our water resources\, how the inevitable low river levels affects various freshwater species and what action can be taken to strengthen our water resilience. Discussion about the best steps to take will be very much encouraged! \n  \nAll welcome!

SUMMARY:Stoke Brook River Restoration week 2
DESCRIPTION:Join BART to improve in-river habitat for Stoke Brook within the Bristol Frome catchment. We are looking for volunteers to join us. \n\n\nMeeting location 9:30am:Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre\, Fiddlers Wood Ln\, Bradley Stoke\, Bristol\, BS32 9BS \n\nFinishing about 3:30pm. \n\nThis task involves lifting tree branches and large woody debris\, whilst wading through the river to create brushwood berm features. \nPlease bring: \n\nWellies – waders preferred as the river will be deep in places.\nAppropriate clothing for the weather\, e.g coat\nFood and water for the day\nGloves\nHand sanitiser\n\nMaterials and tools will be provided. \nPlease note children aged 16 and under are not covered by our insurance and this task may not be suitable/ safe for them to attend. \nFor any questions please email Rozy: rozy@bristolavonriverstrust.org \n\n\n\n\nWhat is a brushwood berm? \nAs shown above\, the structures are constructed using natural materials; by coppicing trees on the riverbanks and securing limbs into the riverbed at the correct angle into the flow. The space behind the tree limb extending into the channel and the riverbank is packed with brushwood and secured in place. These structures help to re-meander the profile of the river and provide a diverse range of habitat. Over time\, the structures will accumulate sediment and eventually vegetate to become part of the riverbank. \n\nSign up through the Eventbrite website: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bristol-frome-habitat-improvement-tickets-414590640767
