BART was out in South Bristol adding more “drain art” for our “Only Rain Down the Drain” campaign, bringing a splash of creativity to Bedminster with support from the John Lewis Spedan Foundation. This time, instead of our usual yellow fish, we collaborated with talented local artists to paint beautiful river-themed murals at Manor Woods Valley, breathing new life into the message that only rain belongs in the drain.
We all know that storm drains serve the important purpose of taking away rainwater from the streets to stop them flooding, but many may not pay much thought about where this water actually ends up?
Many urban drainage systems, like storm drains, are designed to carry water directly to a river rather than flowing into a sewage pipe and being taken to a treatment facility.
Pouring contaminants such as paint and soap down a surface water drain, leads directly to rivers, harming wildlife, polluting water, and damaging ecosystems.
If you’re in the area, keep an eye out for our river-inspired murals—let’s all share the message: Only Rain Down the Drain!
Earlier this month, we ran the Only Rain Down The Drain campaign in Bradley Stoke generating some outstanding artwork along the way!
We’re looking forward to organising more community events with local schools and groups. If you’d like to get involved, please reach out to Amy at amy@bristolavonriverstrust.org
A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, the John Lewis Spedan Foundation, and Bristol City Council for their support in making this campaign a success!
